Chapter One
Lexi sat in her father's easy chair, dangling her slender legs over the arms, silently watching.
In the middle of the room was a card table and four chairs. Lexi's little brother Ben knelt on one of the chairs, his arms propped on the table, his chin cupped in his hand. He stared intently at the puzzle pieces spread across the table.
Lexi's grandmother, Grace Carson, also stared at the puzzle pieces on the table. Her eyes were vague and unfocused.
"The piece you've got goes here, Grandma," Ben announced. With gentle fingers he guided his grandmother's hand to an open space in the nearly completed puzzle. "You're doing good, Grandma," Ben encouraged. "Look, we're almost done."
The puzzle was simple, with large pieces and bright colors depicting cartoon animals. Ben had put the puzzle together a dozen times. He never tired of it.
"Where does this go, Ben?" Grandma asked, staring blankly at the puzzle piece she'd picked up.
"It's the elephant's trunk. Grandma. It goes right here." Ben pointed to the spot with a stubby finger.
