PREFACEThe Bolyai János Mathematical Society organized the fourth Colloquium on Topology in Budapest from 7th to 11th August 1978. Three colloquia on the same subject have been previously organized by the Society in the years 1956, 1964, and 1972.The members of the Organizing Committee were the following:A. Császár (chairman),P. Hamburger (secretary),M. Bognár, S. Buzási, E. Deák, J. Gerlits, I. Juhász, J. Szenthe.Compared to the third colloquium held in 1972, both the number of foreign participants and of communications increased considerably, namely from 96 to 135 and from 71 to 127, respectively. This phenomenon shows the still increasing importance of Topology and of its applications in other disciplines, not only in the classical fields on Analysis or Algebra but also in quite new domains such as e.g. Mathematical Linguistics. On the other hand, a great number of communications illustrated the efficacy of modern set-theoretical methods in solving extremely deep problems of Topology. The Colloquium had 19 Hungarian participants and 135 participants from 23 other countries. There were 5 one hour lectures, 21 lectures of 30 minutes each, and 101 short communications of 15 minutes. The latters were held in four parallel sections, as well as a part of the half hour lectures. Further opportunity to informal discussion was provided by an excursion to Visegrád and Esztergom, offering also the possibility of enjoying a beautiful landscape and many treasures of medieval Hungarian art and architecture. The present volume contains, besides the detailed scientific programme of the Colloquium and the list of participants, the papers submitted for publication to the Organizing Committee; they vary from short summaries to detailed expositions with proofs. It also includes some papers of topologists who were not able, for various reasons, to- 3 -
