4 INTRODUCTION This book is not only a practical touring guide for the independent traveler, but is alsó invaluable for those who would like to know more about the country. It is divided into 7 regions, each containing between 2 and 7 tours. The tours start and finish in major towns and cities which we consider to be the best centers for exploration. Each tour has details of the most interesting places to visit en route. Side panels cater for specíal interests and requirements and cover a rangé of categories - for those whose interest is in history, wildlife or walking, and those who have children. There are alsó panels which highlight scenic stretches of road and which give details of events, crafts and customs. The numbers link them to the appropriate main text. The simple route directions are accompanied by an easy-to-use map of the tour, and there are addresses of local tourist information centers in somé of the towns en route as well as in the start town. Simple charts show howfar it is from one town to the next in kilometers and miles. These can help you to decide where to take a breák and stop overnight, for example. (All distances quoted are approximate.) Before setting off it is advisable to check with the information center at the start of the tour for recommendations on where to break your journey and for additional information on what to see and do, and when best to visit.
