TOURING ENGLAND 7
IN THE following pages are to be found route directions for more than 130 motor tours, information on thousands of places of interest, some 130 pages of plans of important towns and cities and an atlas. Together they represent the best of England's many and varied attractions.
The book is divided into four regions covering the West Country, South and Southeast England, Central England and East Anglia, and the North Country.
East section contains detailed route directions on motor tours with information on the most popular areas to visit in the region. There are descriptions of hundreds of houses open to the public, villages with delightful centuries-old streets, parks and country areas, zoos and other colourful and noteworthy places.
Castles, stately homes and other places of interest described in the tours are not necessarily open to the public or may be open only at certain times. It is therefore advisable to check the opening times of any place before planning a stop there. Properties administered by the National Trust, English Heritage and Welsh Ancient Monuments (NT, EH and CADW) are generally open most of the year, but this should be checked with the relevant organisation, as should precise opening times. Many churches are locked when not in use, but it is usually possible to gain access from the key keeper.
The atlas shows the location of most of the entries in the touring sections as well as other important features. The key maps on pages 28-9 list all the motor tours and their locations, and pinpoint the areas covered by the maps on each page. In the extensive town plan section are detailed, up-to-the-minute plans of important towns and cities, with comprehensive street indexes, and brief descriptions of the towns. Finally, an index at the back of the book lists all the entries.
