PROLOGUE The jungle was alive with subtle sounds, which were interrupted from time to time by the raucous squawk of one of the huge parrots, which sat like colorful tents making branches sag dangerously beneath their weight. Nothing could move without rousing the interest and comment of the tenants of the trees. Koo, waiting in the shade beside a tiny clearing, knew that he would hear the approach of anything-or anyone. If the parrots didn't warn him, the Small Brothers in the trees surely would. As he waited, he fingered the amulet around his hairy neck. He twitched his agile tail, curling its tip around a young tree or snaking it forth to admire its Iength and glossiness. His family had always prided themselves on their tails. At a great distance, there was a sudden cacophony. The Small Brothers above him scampered through the treetops to discover what was happening along the Big TVail that ran beside the river. Koo didn't move. The meeting was to take place here.
