It is my privilege to express our gratitude and many thanks on behalf of the ICSOBA Directorate and ICSOBA to the Metailurgical Society of CIM and its President Professor George P. Demopoulos, for the acceptance and support to organize the 17th Symposium of ICSOBA in conjunction with COM 2006 (the 45th Conference of Metallurgists) The theme chosen for COM 2006 is: "Global partnerships and technological innovation." The history of CIM had its beginnings in 1887. In 1896 the Federated Canadian Mining Institute was organized. In 1920, the institute changed its name to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and in 1990 it changed again to the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum. A Metallurgy Division of CIM was förmed in Québec City in 1945. The first Conference of Metallurgists was organized in 1962, and each following one became an important annual event. At the Sixth Conference of Metallurgists held at Queen's University in Kingston in 1967, the decision was taken to change the name of the Division to the Metailurgical Society. ICSOBA is very pleased to be the partner of the Metailurgical Society of CIM in the coorganization of the international symposium on "Alumínium: From Raw Materials to Application." This Volume of the Proceedings - published in TRAVAUX, the technical periodical of ICSOBA - contains 27 papers of the Bauxité and Alumina Sessions, while the papers of the Plenary Session and the aluminium related papers on Aluminium Reduction Technology, Cast Shop Technology, Wrought Alloys, Characterisation and High-value Products, can be found in the traditional publication of the Metailurgical Society of CIM, Aluminium-Light Metals 2006. The sequence of the papers follows the schedule of the sessions and at the formai editing both the traditions of the TRAVAUX series and the prescriptions of the Author's Guide of this Symposium have been considered in order to find an adequate compromise. The Symposium organizers, Dr. Gilles Dufour and Prof. Dr. Peter Paschen co-chairs and Dr. Florence Paray Symposium coordinator together with Dimitris Contaroudas, ICSOBA President, significantly supported the preparation of this issue of TRAVAUX. I am very thankful to the members of the Advisory Committee, especially to Mr. Jean Guimond, fiirthermore to Mrs. Kelly Stevenson for their kind assistance in organization of the papers and in the editorial work. I should express our appreciation to the session chairs: Dr. JeanPierre Riffaud, Dr. György Komlóssy, Dr. Rolf Arpe, Dr. Monique Authier & B. S. Páni, and Mr. Steve Healy, for their careful review of the papers and useful comments.
