Editor's Preface
It is the wish of Sir Peter that his published travel diaries should retain as much as possible of their original character: therefore irregularities in his abbreviations and style have been left unchanged. On the other hand I felt it was necessary to give a few words of explanation about many of the people mentioned in these diaries, and to include maps showing the places that Sir Peter and Lady Scott visited. The reader may also like to know the following:
1 There are a few passages in this book which do not originate from Sir Peter's travel diaries; these are indented in the text.
2 Phrases or words enclosed in square brackets have been inserted by me.
3 Only the species names of animals, birds and fishes begin with capital letters, other more general names do not.
For example: a Santa Cruz Marine Iguana, but an iguana; a Golden-breasted Glossy Starling is the name of a species of bird, a chestnut brown pigeon is not. Italics are used to distinguish scientific from vernacular names as well as for their normal purposes.
4 The illustrations have been reproduced from Sir Peter's diaries most of which are 15.5 x 22 cm. It has been necessary to reduce some of the pictures and magnify others.
