Climate ranges from hot, subtropical lowlands of the north to cold and rainy in the south. January in Buenos Aires is like Washington, D.C. in July; July is like San Francisco in January. Arid to semiarid; temperate in the south and east; tropical in the north; most of southern Australia has warm summers and mild winters (seasons are reversed from North America). Lightweight clothing for summer; lightweight winter clothing for November to April. A hat and sunglasses are essential. Not all rooms are warmly heated in the winter. Lightweight cottons are advisable for the north; woolens are needed during the winters and yearround in the extreme south. Dress is more formai than in the U.S. Shorts are not universally acceptable.
