Jim Hawkins is telling the story
Chapter i
My name is Jim Hawkins, and I am fifteen years old. My father owned an inn at a quiet place near the sea. The village was fifty miles from Bristol.
It was September 17—. One day an old seaman came to the inn. He was tall and strong and he had a big, brown face. There were cuts and marks on his face. A servant was pushing a Uttle cart behind the seaman. There was a heavy chest on the cart.
The seaman looked at the sea and at the inn.
'This is a nice place,' he said. 'I like the sea. Do a lot of people come here ?'
My father replied, 'No. It's sad but true. Only a few people come here.'
'That's good,' the seaman said. Then he called the servant. 'Take the chest inside,' he said. 'I'll stay at this inn. I'm a plain man and I like plain food. I like rum, too. Bring me a glass of rum.'
I helped the servant to carry the chest into the inn. My ' father brought the rum.
'What is your name, sir?' my father asked.
'You may call me captain,' the seaman said. He threw a few coins on the floor and also threw one to the servant. He said, 'Take your cart and go.'
The captain was usually quiet but he drank a lot of rimi. He went out every day and walked near the sea. Every evening he asked me a question, and it was always the same question. He said, 'Jim, have you seen any strange seamen today?'
One day he said, 'Jim, I know a seaman with only one leg and he's a very bad man. Perhaps he'll come here. If you watch for him, I'll give you sixpence.'
That bad man did not come to the inn, but I was afraid. I saw him in my dreams every night.
