TRENDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
Veszprém, April 9-12, 1996
In memory of Prof. András Székely
The fifteen papers included in this volume have been selected from those presented at the European Regional Conference of the International Association of Geomorphologists (lAG), Veszprém, Hungary, 9-12 April, 1996. This coUecdon is meant to provide an insight into most of the topics which appeared on the agenda of the various sessions and thus to reflect, to some extent, the scope of ongoing research in Hungary and in the countries of her broader neighbourhood today.
Part of the contributions tackle such general issues as volcano geomorphology (A. Székely), surface planation (M. Pécsi), paleokarst functioning (L. Korpás) and chemical denudation (I. Gams) along with detailed surveys of weU-defined test areas for particular research such as granite weathering (A. Ivan K. Kirchner), karst hydrology and geomorphology (K. Barta T. Tarnai) and paleogeographic reconstruction (M. Korpás-Hódi M. Bohn-Havas; Sz. Czigány) Two papers are concerned with the products of Pleistocene geomorphic processes (Ch. Tarnóczai F. Schweitzer; A. Cesnu-levicius). A special attention is devoted to investigations of environmental changes (Á. Kertész alii), human interven-rion into the landscape (D. Lóczy) with its deleterious consequences (A. Kerényi Gy. Szabó; L. Rétvári I. Tózsa).
The collection of papers is dedicated to the memory of Professor András Székely, former head of Department of Physical Geography, who died during the preparation of the volume. He wiU be long remenbered for his enthusiasm in educating generations of geography teachers and research geographers (including myself) at the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. The volume is intended for the broader society physical geographers, who are equally interested in classical geomorphology and in the utilisation of geographical knowledge in approaches to environmental issues.
Dénes Lóczy
Geografía Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria was glad to accept the proposal of Dr. D. Lóczy to publish a selection of the works presented at the European Regional Conference of the International Associarion of Geomophologists held in Veszprém. The final editing of the texts, for what concerns both the language and the output of figures, was supervised by Dr. Marta Pappalardo of the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, University of Pisa.
