By the time you have finished reading a novel or a short story, you have decided whether it was good or bad or somewhere in between. Your judgment is mostly based on how you felt about what you read: Did you like it or didn't you?
But have you ever asked yourself why you liked a novel or short story? Was it the characters? Did you feel you understood them and cared about the experiences they were going through? Were you kept interested by the plot? Was it the suspense in the story that held your attention?
All of these elements may have had something to do with why you liked what you liked. But as you become a more experienced reader, you will find that additional factors also become important. Part of your decision about what is good fiction will be based on how the author tells the story. You will come to appreciate the techniques the author has used to create the work of fiction for you.
An author has to decide on the way to tell every story. The author must determine the point of view from which the story will be related.
