Chapter One
The weather had been sultry when she left New York and so hot that she switched on the air-conditioning in the long, sleek Lincoln. Because she had not driven herself in weeks she had to keep her attention riveted on handling the car and threading her way through traffic. She headed north, concentrating on her driving, stopping, starting, passing other vehicles correctly. Only when traffic began to thin out and she could relax at the wheel did her thoughts go back to the familiar treadmill.
What was she going to do? The whole structure of the life she had built so carefully was threatened. Even now, after weeks of anguished thought, she did not know how to prevent disaster. Three years, three incredible years of living at a peak she had never even conceived, and now it could come to an end. If she could sleep, perhaps she could think more clearly, see some way out. If only she could sleep!
In spite of his attempts to pretend that all was well, she knew that Max was deeply concerned about her. After the second attack of hysterics he had insisted on consulting her physician himself and persuaded her to take the sedatives that had been prescribed. The worst of it was that she had not been able to explain her condition to his satisfaction.
