Introduction: The Importance of Trust
Trust is essential to life in society. Social interaction and organization would be impossible in a world where nobody could be trusted. We need a dependable and predictable environment to be able to order our lives with reasonable confidence. Because of that, we want and need the world, and the people in it, to be trustworthy.
We come into this world trusting. Suspicion and mistrust are attitudes we learn later, and they are always learned through painful experiences. They change the innocent eyes of childhood into the wary, watchful eyes that look out of so many older faces.
Trust is a necessary condition for the formation of any type of personal relationship. Can you imagine someone saying to you, "I would really like to be your friend, but don't expect me to trust you"? You might say, or at least think, "Go find yourself another friend!"
The more important the relationship is, the more vital trust is to that relationship. If I am part of a climbing team and am hanging over a cliff by the end of a rope, the primary concern in my mind regarding the person on the other end of the rope is not whether or not I like him or her, but whether or not I can trust him or her. My life may depend on that.
The more intimate the relationship is, the more costly the commitment of trust becomes. Thus, it lies right at the heart of relationships like marriage, parenthood and leadership.
