PREFACE
In order to get the "big picture" about Bible doctrine, and understand the relationship of one doctrine to another, picture a tree. We will start our study by examining theological roots, then trunk, and finally branches.
The tree's root system is foundational. Thus our study begins by examining the existence and nature of God. Next comes the trunk of the tree—which we liken to the Scriptures. The branches then represent the various truths taught in Scripture.
And may we add some more? The leaves and fruit speak of what God is doing even today—through the lives of Christians. That's what makes this study exciting and relevant. The Creator of all truth wants to work through us! That's the greatest honor we could ever have. And an awesome responsibility.
First of all, what do we mean by doctrine? The Concise Dictionary of Christian Theology, by Millard Erickson, defines doctrine as "a belief or teaching regarding theological themes____" As we proceed through this course we wiU
be looking at who God is, what He has done, and what He teaches us through His Word, the Bible.
Secondly, why should anyone take a course on doctrines? Isn't reading the Bible enough? What benefit will there be for your life? Such a study is beneficial because:
