In little more than a century the nation was transformed from a medieval kingdom into an emergent modern state, on the brink of becoming a major world power. The change began when Henry Tudor, a virtually unknown Welshman, asserted his rival claim to the English throne and defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. Lasting just a few hours on a summer's afternoon in 1485, this was a minor battle but one that had major consequences. Richard III was killed in the fighting and Henry Tudor seized the English Crown. Thus was established a dynamic new dynasty that was to have a huge impact on England's future. The Tudor rulers, like their medieval predecessors, were convinced that they could govern their subjects using whatever methods they considered appropriate.
