AN INTRODUCTION TO THE 1973-74 EDITIONS OF THE "GETAWAY GUIDES" In the two years since they were first published, more than 2,000,000 copies of TWA'S GETAWAY GUIDES have been sold or distributed to travelling Americans-and thus these little books have become the most heavily read travel guides in the world today. We think we know why. Unlike the books produced by committees or staffs of travel writers, the GETAWAY GUIDES are each researched and written by either one author, or two at the most. Each book reflects his or her personal judgments, tastes, likes, and dislikes, and each results from on-the-spot observations and experiences, in the grand tradition of good travel writing. Most important, each book has been written under conditions of total editorial freedom. TWA has neither censored nor influenced the judgments of the authors, and has permitted us to be as critical as we wished of certain establishments and locations, as outspoken and direct as our opinions led us to be. In the past, much travel literature-particularly airline-sponsored travel literature-has tended to sell a "pie-in-the-sky" view of famous cities and attractions. In the GETAWAY GUIDES, we write for modern Americans who seek realistic information about a travel destination, and who, by dealing with facts rather than cliches, gain a far greater sense of enjoyment and reward in their holiday travels. Vacation travel conducted in a sophisticated, knowledgeable, modern manner-that, after all, is what the "GETAWAY" theme of TWA is all about. Using a GETAWAY GUIDE, and following the GETAWAY approach, one travels not to experience the routine and the familiar, but to discover the unusual and the off-beat; to immerse oneself in radically different cultures; to react to new modes of life, new attitudes-and thereby to broaden one s own life. We're grateful that we were encouraged to follow this approach in these new, revised editions of the GETAWAY GUIDES, whose preparation has been an exciting adventure. We hope they netp you to enjoy the most memorable of vacations in the great cities served by TWA.
