INTRODUCTION by L. Craig Fraser On both sides during World War II the radio was the main form of amusement and the principal source of up-to-date news. The infant television services, not yet emerged from the novelty stage, were suspended. Radio unchallenged, entertained and informed civilians at home, in factories, and air-raid shelters, and the fighting forces wherever they were. The radio was also recognized as a very potent weapon in psychological warfare. It could carry the spoken word to millions and consequently it became one of the major forms of propaganda during the war. One of the broadcasters from Germany to Britain stood out in the public's mind; so much so that many of the English people forgot that he was one of a team. To them he was regarded not only as personally responsible for all the enemy's English-language broadcasts, but actually influencing the German conduct of the war. When William Joyce first became aware of the Jewish virus which was spreading across Europe, we do not know; but we do know that he first became politically active while a student enrolled at Birkbeck College in 1923. It was in December of that year that he joined a group called the British Fascisti. OrganlTied in May of 1923 the British Fascisti was the first movement to call itself Fascist and to claim Italy as its spiritual inspiration. Its guiding light was Miss Rötha Lintorn-Orman, the 26-year-old daughter of a major and the grand-daughter of a field-marshal The goals of this early British Fascist organization were the revival of British patriotism, the upholding of the established legal framework, and the opposing of the spread of Jewish Communism. Local units were to deal with Jewish led Bolshevik activities in their own districts, and if they failed to stop - 3 -
