There are many sources of conflict between and within nations,but the outcome of the struggle between democracy and communismwill largely determine all other issues that mankind faces today.The Armed Forces of the United States have a vital role in this con-flict. They are pledged to support and defend the Constitution. Theyare charged with insuring the security of the nation. They stand as abulwark against the continuing threat of Communist military aggres-sion while the contest goes on in other arenaspolitical, economic, andpsychological.Members of the U.S. Armed Forces need to understand the basicfacts about democracy, communism, and the clash between the twosystems. They must be kept informed about the march of world events.They must recognize the relationship of today's international develop-ments to this conflict between the two systems. They must realize whywe and our allies must be ready to resist Communist military aggres-sion in far-off corners of the worldeven when events there seem, onthe surface, of little concern to the average American.The Department of Defense is sensitive to the need to keep militarypersonnel informed, and U.S. military commanders are engaged in dis-charging this responsibility. How can there be instilled in a recruit anappreciation of a perplexing, involved struggle that goes far beyondmilitary action?
