PREFACE How does one measure success in typewriting? In the classroom, we use such yardsticks as speed, accuracy, usable lines produced, and other productivity measurements. As typewriting teachers, though, we know the real measure of success is how well the skills we teach our students serve them in their personal and professional lives. Today, more than ever, typewriting is a marketable skill. Each year, the number of job openings in office occupations increases; and, due to changes in technology, more and more of them are requiring varying degrees of keyboard proficiency. Regardless of our students' ultimate career objective—whether it be in data processing, management, or in the more traditional areas of secretarial and office support services—the keyboarding and related typewriting skills we teach will be one of the keys to their success. objectives Houghton Mifflin Typewriting: Keyboard Mastery and Applications is a comprehensive instructional program carefully designed to train fast, accurate, and competent typists. This broadly stated goal encompasses a hierarchy of objectives: • To develop keyboarding skills for personal and vocational use. • To build production skills to prepare students for increasing opportunities in office support occupations. • To develop basic job competencies and personal characteristics needed for success in any occupational area: deci-sion-making skills, time-management skills, communication skills, and positive work attitudes. • To familiarize students with up-to-date office procedures, terminologies, and technologies that have an impact on their personal and professional lives. components A complete package of instructional materials has been developed to meet these objectives. The package includes: a first-year, a second-year, and a combined student textbook; teacher's annotated editions of the first- and second-year textbooks; a teacher's resource guide; a workbook for each semester; a test package for each semester; and instructional and timing cassettes. features The Houghton Mifflin Typewriting Program promotes student mastery of keyboarding and production skills through a variety of special features. Skill-Building Program. Intensive technique development through technique timings, speed-building drills, and accuracy practices is the basis of the skill-building program, enabling students to develop speed and accuracy. Simplified Instructions. The directions for completing each job, as well as explanations of formats and procedures, are presented in simple, easy-to-read language. Students can learn independently while they are developing their ability to read and follow directions. Realistic Work Assignments. Students type from rough-draft, handwritten, unarranged, and incomplete copy to gain experience in working with different kinds of source documents and in planning their work. Production Skills. Development of production skills begins early with timed Project Previews during the first year. Emphasis on production intensifies during the second year with extensive use of Production Previews, timed Applications, and two- to four-day Production Projects. These timed projects provide intensive practice on frequently used formats and prepare students to type under pressure—as in a real office situation. Communication Skills. Think and Type activities give students practice in composing at the typewriter, while the Language Arts and Apply the Rule activities review basic capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and related language skills. Decision-Making Skills. Activities are structured to give students increasing responsibility for the details of their work. The sequence is show, tell, remind, and remember. Initially, students type from completely formatted copy in the Project Previews. The next few applications are accompanied by complete instructions. In later applications, these detailed instructions are replaced by reminders in the form of "cues" and "checkpoints." Finally, students are expected to remember the format—or look it up in convenient Need to Knows. Electronic Office. Lesson content and vocabulary throughout reflect the terminology and procedures used in today's electronic office. A complete hands-on word processing simulation is provided for the second year. Simulations. To provide practice in on-the-job situations, seven realistic simulations are included in the second-year text. The simulations give students practice in typing a variety of documents while exposing them to the terminology and procedures for various office settings, such as legal, medical, and government typing. Testing Program. The Measuring Mastery lessons in the student textbook can be used for informal or formal evaluation of student progress. Longer tests in the separate test booklets contain alternate timed writings and application problems, as well as objective questions to check student comprehension of basic typewriting concepts. acknowledgments The publication of any textbook requires the efforts of many people, and this book is no exception. Among those who deserve special mention are our students and colleagues, who used drafts of our materials in their classes; the teachers and students who participated in the learner verification study; and the more than 1,000 teachers who responded to our nationwide typewriting survey. To all of them go our sincere thanks and appreciation for their valuable comments, suggestions, and encouragement. J. Chiri, J. Kutsko, T. Stoddard vii
