INTRODUCTION Here is a new library of supplementary readers arranged at three levels-Primary, Secondary, and Aduit, each level being progressive in three grades. This ensures a carefully controlled pattern of difficulties in which the grading is based on teaching experience and the needs of the reader, rather than on a rigid word list. For this reason the library is suitable for use with any language course. Each text is profusely illustrated and avoids the usual editorial devices which tend to obstruct a ready flow of reading. The editors believe that good supplementary readers should have a natural appeal powerful enough to swing the reader forward unwearied by the language of the books. They have accordingly sought out modern, imaginative and child-centred themes. Macmillan's Pattern Readers reflect the belief that one role of the English language in the world today is to be the vehicle for new ideas, facts and skills and the means of stimulating in a reader a lively interest in the world around him. The Primary series is designed for foreign learners of English who begin their course at the Primary level. The graded texts-Beginners', Intermediate and Advanced-have been especially written to appeal to the natural interests of readers of this age. There is a careful balance between fiction and non-fiction, and the series is notable for its wide rangé of topics.
