FORE,WORDAn international journal of urology is a necessity to-day.Late in January 1954, I took the first steps to its inception. The response was overwhelmingly encouraging. The original plan of the Folia Urologica Internationalia called for representation in as many countries as possible through their own Redac-tores who were to decide the acceptance of contributions from their own respective countries. An adequate number of Collaboratores was assigned to each Redactor. This far-reaching autonomy seemed to assure harmonious international cooperation.Twenty-two single sections had already been organized, when Hein-rich Heusser (Basel) - whom I had asked to become Redactor for Switzerland - informed me that he would be unable to accept, since he, Einar Ljunggren (Goteborg) and Ferdinand May (Munich) also intended to publish an international urological journal, the Acta Urologica. It was Ferdinand May who had originally conceived the idea of promoting the Acta and had found an interested co-worker in Dr. Heinz Karger of the publishing house of S. Karger of Basel. The prospect of launching two similar journals of urology created a difficult situation. Nevertheless I was encouraged in my conviction that such an international journal was most timely. Through prehminary written negotiations we sought for unity of opinion and discussed joint action to combine both journals. The identity of our goal and our determination for its realization accomplished this fusion in Basel on September 8, 1954.May the UROLOGIA INTERNATIONALIS fulfil our aspiration: Exchange of scientific ideas and experiences and the advancement of international relations.Peter A.
