The aims of the book
It should be made clear from the outset that the aims of Using Newspapers in the Classroom are neither to prepare students to become journalists, nor to teach them how to write in a newspaper style. Instead, this book attempts to achieve other important aims:
Meeting teachers' needs
To provide teachers with practical and creative ideas which exploit all the different sections of newspapers.
Meeting students' needs
To enable teachers to meet the diverse needs and interests of their students, using newspaper materials which engage and challenge them.
Developing language skills
To provide students with purposeful and valuable language practice through newspaper-based activities and tasks which develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
Fostering positive attitudes
To instil in students a positive and comfortable attitude towards working with English-language newspapers, and towards reading generally in English, both inside and outside the classroom.
Encouraging reading
To promote extensive reading by giving students the confidence, the motivation and the ability to continue their reading outside the classroom.
