PREFACE This book contains a series of illustrations of the city of Venice in the following order: St. Mark's Square with views of the monuments and spaces which define it; St. Mark's Basilica with photographs following an itinerary from the left side of the exteriőr to the interior; the Ducal Palace following the usual route up to the Bridge of Sighs; St. Mark's Basin and the Grand Canal with the lateral "ni" (small canals) and the parts of the city closest to the Grand Canal as far as Rialto, and up to the railway station and Piazzale Roma (P). Ali the stops of the public transport system are given, together with the various lines which stop at them (for example, St. Mark's boát stop, n°15: Line 1 (Vaporetto), Line 2 (Motoscafo) and Line 34 (Tourist Service) stop here. The Friars' Church, the Basilica of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, the Ghetto, "Minor" Venice with typical and unusual sights, the islands ofthe lagoon such as Murano, Burano, Torcello and the Lido are alsó included. Each illustration is explained, and a brief note accompanies the visitor in the interiors and exteriors inside and out of the city: hence the subtitle ofthe book. This book has certain precise aims. Firstly, to make it possible for the visitor unfamiliar with Venice to move around the "calli" and use the public transport system in the most convenient way to reach the various monuments, islands and other places he wishes to visit, right from his arrival in Piazzale Roma or at the station; then, to point out or recall to memory the churches, palaces, museums and particular points of interest most worthy of attention; to remind the visitor on holiday, by means of a simple indication, of the fame of a particular painting, the originality of a certain space, the characteristics of the city's architecture and the importance of the lagoon environment, by means of a simple, brief note in the text; and lastly, to provide a reminder and souvenir to be taken home. Its aim is not to illustrate all Venice, which would be beyond the scope of any book, but to express the city's own particular taste, atmosphere and originality through photographs and brief notes.
