WELCOME TO VENICE For hundreds of years-and especially in the Romantic period of the 18th-19th centuries-Venice has been a must for those who appreciate art and beauty. People from all over the world come-and then come back again-to revei in the experience of its unique setting and seemingly coutless art treasures. We have strived to make this guidebook a simple and enjoyable way to tour the city and get an understanding of its complex reality, something that is quite difficult to do in a city as rich in artf history, and culture as Venice. Our method has been to break up the city into tenf easy-to-follow itineraries with an appendix to provide essential information on the environs. Our book begins with a brief introduction to Venetian history and art history. Its purpose is to give the visitor a deeper understanding of the urbanistic, architectural, and artistic marvels he will encounter on his tour, all of which are the result of centuries of growth and change. (Still today, despite the constant threat posed by the waters of the Adriatic Sea, Venice is an active and vitai center. Hopefully, it will continue to be so for centuries to come.) We are convinced that, once the guidebook has served its primary purpose and you are once more back home, you will turn to it again and again as a souvenir of the unforgettable days spent on the lagoon. So, felice soggiorno, have a wonderful stay in Venice. THE PUBLISHER
