FACTS ABOUT VIENNA
Geographical Information
Location
Johann Strauss' description of Vienna as the city "on the Blue Danube" was
somewhat inaccurate, since only the easternmost districts are situated along
the great river. The actual city center is located for the most part southeast of
the Danube Canal.
Vienna is spread out over low hills and bordered to the west, southwest, and
north by the Vienna Woods (1.400 km2/546 sq. miles). The southern and east-
ern boundaries are formed by the shallow Vienna Basin and the Marchfeld. The
city's highest point is the Hermannskogel (534 m/1.752 ft), its lowest point is
along the banks of the Danube (151 m/495 ft).
Vienna's 1,6 million inhabitants live on an area of 415 km2 (160 sq. miles), a
population density of 3.855 per square kilometer (10.000 per sq. mile). The
twenty-three districts are arranged around the old part of the city, the first
district, in two rings. The "inner districts" (3rd - 9th) lie between the Ringstrasse
and the Gürtel boulevard. The "outer districts" (10th - 19th) outside the Gürtel
are former suburbs that became a part of the city in the late 19th century. The
districts between the Danube and the Danube Canal (2nd and 20th) and east of
the Danube (21st-23nd) are also considered "outer districts".
Each district has its own name:
