33 THE STRATIGRAPHIC CORRELATION OF THE TETHYS-PARATETHYS NEOGENE /IGCP Project No.25., "Stratigraphie correlation Tethys--Paratethys Neogene"/ Jan Benes ¦As the initiator and organizer of the project executed under the "International Geological Correlation Program" I consider it my duty to give a short information of the aim, organizational method and results of the project which has already been finished. When the conference of the I.U.G.S. held in Budapest on the occassion of the MÂFI /Hungarian Geological Institute/ Centenary in 1969 accepted the proposals of the IGCP, the author of this article made an immidiate recommendation for the programme of correlating the Neogene of the Central and Eastern Paratethys /"Stratigraphie Correlation Central-Eastern Paratethys Neogene"/. The project was accepted by the presidium of IGCP without delay. The careful organization and the scientific work proved successful already at the beginning. Therefore in 19 7 3 the presidium of the IGCP requested the project to be extended to the area of the Mediterranean Tethys. Thus a new task, highly demanding in objectives, organization work and execution was born /"Stratigraphie Correlation Tethys-Paratethys Neogene"/. It covered the" areas of all the Neogene basins and parts of the basins between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Pacific; Central and Eastern Europe; North Africa from Marocco to Egypt; the area of X Doc.RNDr.Jan Senes Dr.Sc., Geological Institut of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava
