To the Reader This little book is intended for those who, like you, are able to spend only a few days in Budapest. We feel sure that, whether you are still only planning your tour, or are already here, you want to get to know as much about the city as possible in the short time at your disposal. The aim of this guide is to help you do just that and, at the same time, to suggest ways in which you can plan your programme so as to make the most of your time. Obviously, you cannot even try to see everything! And, as not all the things worth seeing, or all the beauty-spots, are close to one another, we have outlined a series of walks which will take you to those parts of the town, and of its immediate environs, which are of the greatest interest and importance. In this way, we hope, you will be able to form an accurate and vivid general impression of what Budapest has been, and of what it is. If you are going to spend only one day in Budapest, you will be able to get an overall view of the city and a glimpse of the old city centre. If you have two days, you will, in addition, have time to see what remains from Roman times, the Museum of Fine Arts and some of the medicinal baths. In a three days' programme you should also stroll along the city's loveliest avenue, visit the National Museum and, if the weather is fine, go for a walk in the Buda hills or enjoy the panorama from a pleasure-boat. If you are here for four days, you may like to draw up a programme that suits your own personal tastes: you could go to more of the museums, to one of the frequent exhibitions, look in at some cultural or technical institution, take part in some sport (even if only as a spectator)—or just enjoy yourself.
