Note to the reader My impression of books in the backpacking field is that they are insufiFerably bossy. Walking Softly in the Wilderness cannot be entirely an exception, for no book of manageable length and decent clarity can explore all the possible choices in wilderness gear and methods. Instead, a book must simplify. It must select. Often it must present only one way of doing things when there may be others just as good And the effect cannot fail to be one of arbitrariness. Much of what is said in this book may come, in time, to seem wrong to you, or inefficient, or outdated. That is as it should be. Every backpacker finds a personal style; your style in the wilderness will be your ovra. However, I hope that you will be slow to discount what this book has to say about low-impact methods in the wilderness: about the skills of using but not injuring the vulnerable land. For these are not merely points of "back-country manners" or "wilderness etiquette." Not afterthoughts. Not optional finishing touches. Low-impact methods are the new necessities. And while there are legitimate disagreements about some of the details, the outlines are clear enough. There is little doubt about the things each hiker needs to know and do. I hope you will help.
