Preface1998Since the initial publication of this book in 1994, about a half-dozen new translations of the Chuang Tzu have appeared in the bookstores, most of them partial. In glancing through these recent English renditions, I have noticed echoes of Wandering on the Way, some subtle, some not so subtle. While I am flattered that others may have been inspired by the present work to undertake their own versions and happy that the Chuang Tzu is finally gaining the recognition that it so richly deserves, I shall not deceive myself into thinking that my favorite Chinese book will ever match the stupendous rate of approximately one new English translation per month achieved by the Tao Te Ching.There are so few changes that I wish to make in this second edition of Wandering on the Way that I shall simply note them here. First of all, as I had indicated in the annotations on p. 356, I would now come right out and translate Hu Tzu (p. 69) as Master Pot. Second, on p. 371, under the entry "breathing . . . from the heels," there is a misprint: p. 480 should be p. 52.
