No one knows when exactly Walther von der Vogelweide died or when he was born.
That the greatest poet of the Middle Ages must have been born about 1170, that he became vocal shortly be-fore 1230 and was silent thereafter are facts the philolo-gists can be fairly certain of. Walther is a true child of the world. He is always "relative," always referring to motive and occasion and only the then very fashionable Minnedienst (courtly love poetry) was able — occasionally — to induce him to sing behind a mask in the conventional tones of the day.
But this isn't his forte. He is himself only when he is committed; when he reacts out of a sense of personal concern; when he implores, disputes, and reproaches;
