HOW TO USE THIS INDEX SCOPE AND VALUE The Watch Tower Society is pleased to provide this Index spanning the years 1930 through 1985. It embodies all previously published Indexes plus a complete index for the publications released in 1985. So that related references within main headings will be found together, efforts have been made to harmonize various subject headings and subheadings used over the years. Additionally, certain subjects, particularly those having a large number of entries, have been reorganized. Regular features of The Watchtower and Awake! have been indexed under main headings identical to the feature name. These include "Questions From Readers" (1950-85), "God's Word Is Alive," "Jesus' Life and Ministry," "Young People Ask and "The Bible's Viewpoint." The same is true of the "Question Box" in Our Kingdom Ministry. Life stories of Jehovah's people are indexed under the heading "Life Stories of Jehovah's Witnesses." In the Scripture Index, references to the book Aid to Bible Understanding have been completely revised, listing only those that provide explanations of the verses cited. The Index will be of immense value for you in your field ministry, congregation activity, and personal study. It is of like value in family guidance and in practical matters of everyday life. Regular use of this Index will help you to find the information you need for talks, field-service presentations, reports, compositions, or answering questions. In view of the many years covered, the material indexed somé decades ago should be viewed in the light of Proverbs 4:18: "The path of the righteous ones is like the bright light that is getting lighter and lighter until the day is firmly established." SUBJECTINDEX Order of Listing. Main headings are in alphabetic order. Those consisting of a number, such as 1914 or 144,000, are alphabetized as if they were spelled out. (Thus, 1914 is under "N" for "nineteen fourteen.") Place-names beginning with "St.," such as St. Croix, are alphabetized as if the "St." were spelled out as "Saint." In alphabetizing titles, "the" and "a" are not used but are placed at the end (for instance, BIBLE'S VIEW, THE); exceptions are rare. Subheadings and sub-subheadings are alsó in alphabetic order. However, lists of numbers, such as those under DATES (Calendar) or TEN COMMANDMENTS, are in numerical order. Lists of scriptures, such as those under TRINITY, are in Bible order. How to Find Information. Information is classified by subject rather than by the title of an article in a magaziné or a chapter in a book. However, key words in a title may suggest an existing heading. To locate information, determine what the subject is, select a noun that expresses it, and look under that word to find the references. It is best to try a word or an expression that is as specific as possible since headings for these will provide the most detailed breakdown. For example, if you desire information on immortality of the soul, you will find more under IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL than you will under SOULS. Efforts have been made to index the same information under a variety of pertinent headings. For example, material on
