Please don't be shocked if I begin by saying that in my paper I am not going to talk about Kodály as a teacher, I think, however, you will readily relieve me of this task if I remind you that our seminar as a vAiole will be concerned with Kodály's educational conception. But just now I would like to speak of him primarily as a composer and a scholar not only to avoid possible overlappings but also because I am convinced that an outline of his career will also throw some light upon the right place and proportions of the details, and the disclosure of certain relationships will contributa to a better understanding of the various aspects of his activity.
Tihen checking the Hungarian translation of a book by Kodály "Mein Weg zur Musik" /iffy Way to Music/, I came upon the idea of collecting and publishing in one volume, under the title "My Way to Kodály", the confesá ons of Kodály*s disciples and followers /composers, teachers and folk-music researchers/. This memorial book of a subjective tone would be accompanied and complemented by a volume of essays revealing objectively, by historical-philological methods, the possible approaches to Kodály's life and work. It is to the latter that I want now to contribute a few ideas.
There are different ways for Hungarian and foreign music lovers to approach Kodály's art and even his scientific activity.
