Preface This book is an integral part of the textbook We Learn Polish. It contains notes on grammar and usage as well as exercises, which are related to the texts provided in the first volume of the textbook. The organization of the textbook, which consists of three volumes (texts, grammar and usage notes and exercises, and a grammar of Polish), allows the teacher to vary his approach to the teaching material. Two basic procedures can be adopted here: 1. Starting with the texts which introduce vocabulary and grammatical material in their sentence structures: — through the exercises the learner develops the ability to use the language provided, — the grammar and usage notes help the learner to understand and assimilate grammatical rules of the language, — the textbook of grammar guides the learner in systematizing the structural knowledge of the language; 2. Introducing the structure of the language as described in the textbook Gramatyka j^zyka polskiego dla cudzoziemcow by B. Bartnicka and H. Satkiewicz: — the learner assimilates the details of grammatical rules discussed in the grammar and usage notes for each text, — through the exercises and texts the learner reinforces his knowledge of the language. The grammar and usage notes contain information concerning the grammatical structure of the texts. They discuss pronunciation and spelling, morphology and syntax of the language. In each case grammatical rules essential for understanding a text are explained. While
