How to Use a Thesaurus If you have never used a thesaurus before, you are in for an unique experience. In somé ways, it is like a dictionary, but there are no definitions given. Instead a thesaurus gives you alternative words. First, you will learn the correct spelling of the word. Then, you will be given an extensive selection of choices that you can use instead of the primary word. These are synonyms, and providing a series of similar alternative words is what a thesaurus is all about. When the first thesaurus was published by Peter Mark Roget, the primary purpose of his book was to provide the reader with synonyms for a word. In addition, his goal was to provide the reader with a tool that would offer a wide rangé of words that could be used as a substitute to the originál concept. His book, however, was somewhat more complicated than this one, since it presented not only the synonyms, but expressions that were pertinent to the ideas of seventeenth century philosophy and science. In this thesaurus, the words are presented in alphabetical order, just like a dictionary, to help you quickly find the words you need. However, these are not just synonyms, but the words are presented on the basis of grammatical type-nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, etc. Whether you are a student, a writer, a businessperson, a player of word games, or someone who just enjoys reading, this book will provide you with a wealth of synonyms to increase your word power. One word of caution: you will note that not all of the words presented as synonyms are completely and identically interchangeable alternatives for the primary word. Instead, by presenting the richness of the language, you will have access to a broader choice of words. Somewhere in those extensive choices you will find those words that can best express your intended meaning. It is interesting to note that most lexicographers recognize the fact that there are no true synonyms. Although many words may mean the same thing, they each may have slighüy different meanings. Something that is odd may be abnormal as well as peculiar, but these are not the same words. Something odd may alsó be uncommon, and that still does not carry the same meaning. Therefore, as we have mentioned above, choose your words carefully.
