FOREWORD
This new dictionary Is the Third Edition of what has long been the most widely used paperback dictionary in the country. Based on the recently published Third College Edition of Webster's New World Dictionary, this new dictionary was prepared by the same staff that produced the Third College Edition.
Like its predecessor, this dictionary is designed for those who want a small and handy, dependable, up-to-date reference. Although the word list is smaller and the definitions are shorter, they have been prepared with the same care and lexicographical expertise as that devoted to the preparation of the parent College Edition. ,
The vocabulary entered has been chosen for its usefulness in everyday, practical situations, as for the person reading a periodical or book on the way to work or school, or writing a report or a college composition away from easy access to larger reference works. Thus, in addition to the general vocabulary, this book includes common prefixes and suffixes, abbreviations and acronyms, and geographical and biographical names, all in a single alphabetical listing.
Of particular help to both native speakers of English unsure about fine distinctions and people for whom English is still a secondary language, are the large number of idiomatic expressions included, the many illustrative phrases, designed to clarify meaning and show typical context, the usage labels and phrases to help the user choose the appropriate word for a given situation, and the etymologies, which not only add information about the history of a word but also serve to enhance one's understanding of current meanings and connotations. Also useful as well as attractive are the line drawings supplementing many definitions.
The reader is urged to read the Guide to the Dictionary, beginning on page v, for a clear explanation of the information found in this dictionary.
Although much is new for this book, including the redesigned page, much remains the same. Users of former editions need not fear that what they loved about the old book will be gone from the new. It still bears the stamp of its first and principal author, David Guralnik (now retired), who established the high standard of the New World family of dictionaries.
The creation of this edition was carried out under the able lexicographical guidance of Senior Editor Andrew Sparks, a long-time member of the New World staff.
