The newest rage
afoot among the fashion elite has feminists hopping mad. Ultrachic women around the world are getting high heels surgically implanted into their feet!
The look, called ascenseur naturel or "natural lift" by French designers, entails having two flesh-colored metal poles attached to the recipient's heel bones. Once implanted, the fad-crazy gals have the liigli-heeled look even when barefoot.
"I love my natural lifts — they give my legs a longer, sexier look and now I liave that alluring wiggle that high heels give you all the time, even when I'm on the beach or at home with my boyfiiend," says 26-year-old model Camille Monet of Paris, where the trend took off earlier this summer.
"I like getting those adoring stares from men as I strut by a cafe, without ha\ing to worrj- about a stiletto heel suddenly breaking or a shoe falling off as I run for a cab."
But podiatrists, health officials and feminists deciy the bizarre body-modification fad, which they call dangerous and stupid.
"We're busy removing silicon breast implants from \\'omen because of health concenis — this is
not the time to be looking for frivolous new ways to toy with the human body." blasts tlie head of a French medical . society.
Women's lib groups in both the United States and England are demanding that their governments ban doctors from performing the procedure.
"This is the most odious example , yet in a long line of gimmicks created 1 to alter the female form to correspond 1 to male fantasies, going back to the bustle, which gave the illusion of! ridiculously prominent buttocks.'" de- ' dares Megan Huniford of the British Association for Women's Freedom.
"It's like the old Japanese custom of foot-binding — but what makes this worse is that these so-called 'natural' lifts actually require surgeiy"
Defendei-s of the built-in heels insist the implants are actually safer than shoes, because they're made of titanium and can withstand hea\y use.
Natural lifts are starting to crop up in big U.S. cities like Los Angeles. New York and Miami. Suiprisingly, many customers are high-priced call giris and exotic dancers, according to surgeons, who charge S2.500 per foot.
"\\Tien dancers strip nude except for their shoes and get down on all foui-s, our patrons don't like it wlien the bottom of their high heels look scuffs-," explains the owner of a trend)' gentlemen's club in Miami. "With these natural lifts, you never have I that problem."
