ví Well Said • Second Edition
To the Instructor
Welcome to the second edition of Well Said, a text designed to improve the speech intelligibility of high intermediate to advanced learners of American English. The text was written for the general ESL/EFL population but should be especially useful to those who wish to communicate more clearly in academic, business, scientific, and professional settings.
Well Said, Second Edition, addresses the pronunciation needs of students from a variety of language backgrounds. The body of the text focuses on sound/spelling patterns, syllables, word endings, linking, stress, rhythm, and intonation problems common to students of most language backgrounds. The appendixes provide individualized practice for consonant and vowel problems, which vary widely in most groups of students.
The text adapts to a variety of learning formats—large class, small group, independent learning, and tutorials. The interactive nature of many practices in Chapters 1 through 10, however, makes the text especially well suited for classroom use. The accompanying audio program encourages independent practice and self-study as well. The consonant and vowel practices in the appendixes are designed for independent laboratory use but are also effective with groups of students in the classroom.
The first edition of Well Said was written in response to problems the pronunciation instructor in today's classroom faces:
• Individualizing the pronunciation curriculum to meet the diverse needs of a group of learners
• Guiding learners into natural, relevant communicative contexts so that carryover of pronunciation into speaking is not left entirely to chance
• Establishing realistic goals and reasonable measures of progress that account for destabilization during learning, different rates of acquisition, and the role of the learner in evaluation and monitoring
• Identifying an integrated pronunciation curriculum that precludes the need for heavy supplements of teacher-made materials or texts from other skill areas
In response to these problems. Well Said, Second Edition, continues to offer the following distinctive features:
• Introductory chapter for assessing individual needs and priorities
• Progression from controlled practice into relevant, naturalistic communicative contexts
• Peer monitoring, independent practice, and self-evaluation
• Integration of pronunciation with listening and discourse-level speaking formats
• Emphasis on stress, rhythm, and intonation, as well as on individual speech sounds
• Appendixes with an overview of consonants and vowels and intensive practice with the more troublesome sounds
• Activities that maximize student talking time and provide sufficient practice to enable students to assimilate elements of clear speech into oral communication
