What is Stonehenge?Stonehenge is the most famous prehistoric temple in Europe, and is visited every year by more than half a million people. This Guide tells you what archaeologists have learned about its history. The plan opposite will help you to find your way about. The stones are shown in solid black and various holes underground, found during excavations, are marked in outline.As you walk towards the stone circle from the entrance tunnel, you will see that it is surrounded by a low bank with a ditch outside it. On the north-east sidethe left as you look at itthere is a gap in the bank and ditch. This was the original entrance to Stonehenge. You can see this better in the photograph below taken from the air. In the gap is a large fallen stone, one of two which originally stood upright here, close together, to make a narrow gateway.Leading away from the entrance is the Stonehenge Avenue which runs across the fields to the River Avon near Amesbury. Its edges are marked by low banks with ditches outside. The Heel Stone stands in the Avenue.Just inside the circular bank surrounding the stone circle are two standing stones, the Station Stones, and two mounds, the North and South Barrows.
