CHAPTER I

One cold December afternoon, just before Christmas more than a hundred years ago, when good King George the Third reigned over England, a little boy came cantering over the Dorset downs on a rough New Forest pony.
He was wearing a shovel hat and a riding-cloak, over which was strapped a satchel bulging with school-books.
There was not a soul to be seen in all the wide stretches of the country before him, and when he came to the cross-roads and the signpost he drew up his pony, and murmuring : "They're not here yet, Amelia, we've time to go and cheer up old Timothy," he turned briskly from the road and began to ascend the green, hilly slopes to the highest point of the downs.
