Those who copied books long ago took great pride in their work, and the books which they have left for us are beautiful and valuable. Some of them are so valuable that they may be considered priceless. Each letter was carefully förmed, and inks of différent colours added to the beauty of the result. Sometimes several men were needed to copy a book; for the work was slow. Years were often spent on making one copy.The number of books in the world was therefore small, and only a few men had copies of them to read and study. Most people knew little in those far-off days. Most people could not even read; they had nothing to read.The position is very différent to-day. The world is full of books on every possible subject.
