Introduction
Someone may ask, "Why are Jack Eckerd and Chuck Colson writing a book on work?" Well, let us explain. As you will see shortly, we believe our country is in trouble. We have problems with productivity, standard of living, and the whole character of work, and we believe we know why.
Some of you may also be wondering, "What makes you two think you have answers? You're not economists."
That's certainly true. But, as you'll also soon see, the problem goes much deeper than the economy, into areas where we do have expertise.
Jack knows the marketplace. Starting with two drugstores, he built a business of seventeen hundred stores that employed thirty-five thousand men and women. He also knows government and bureaucracy; under President Gerald Ford he served as administrator of the General Services Administration, one of the largest government agencies. In his home state of Florida he has run PRIDE, one of the most successflil prison industry programs in the world, while through his camps for disadvantaged children he has become more than familiar with our welfare and educational systems. He serves on the boards of numerous organizations, including Heritage Foundation, Hillsdale College, Culver Military, and Prison Fellowship
