INTRODUCTION
Volcanoes and earthquakes always seem to go together. For many years, scientists wondered why volcanoes and earthquakes are neighbors. Then, around 1970, they began to solve the mystery.
The entire surface of the earth is made up of about 12 major plates, or pieces, and several smaller plates. These plates form Earth's crust. In some places the rocky plates reach up very high. These are the continents. In other places, the rock is low, forming basins that are filled with water. These are the oceans.
The plates are like huge rafts of rock. Some plates are pushing against each other. Others are rubbing against each other. And still others are pulling away from each other.
As the plates push, slide, or pull apart, amazing things happen. Volcanoes erupt and earthquakes shake the land along the edges!
As you read this book, you'll discover the whys and hows, wheres and whens of volcanoes and earthquakes. The facts are sure to astound you!
