People in the past often moved from the coasts and plains to escape invaders. They settled in the mountains. In Peru they built high fortress towns which they could defend from attack. Mountain houses have thick walls to keep out the cold. In the Himalayas the animals live on the ground floor and the people live upstairs. x It is hard to grow food on steep slopes.
