INTRODUCTION indsor Castle is probably the best-known symbol of the British Monarchy. It is the only Royal residence which has been in continuous use since William the Conqueror chose the site for a fortress after his conquest of England in 1066. This guide-book seeks to describe two things in particular: first, how the Castle is used today by The Queen and the rest of the Castle community (about 350 people); and second, the Castle's principal features, contents and history. The Queen is often in residence in the Castle. During her visits the Royal Standard is flown from the flagpole above the Round Tower, while in her absence it is replaced by the Union Jack. The State Apartments have been used by Sovereigns for somé 900 years and contain many treasures from the Royal Collection. The magnificent St George's Chapel is the burial place of ten Sovereigns and the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter.
