PREFACE
In this book, John, Margaret and Len are always on hand to help the reader in the interesting task of getting to know the English—and their language. As in Part I, brief infor-mative texts are followed by somewhat more colloquial conversation-pieces. Each contains material illustrating cer-tain grammatical points.
It is hoped that the reader (or student?) will enjoy the English approach to life and learning. The phonetic tran-scriptions are a useful guide to pronunciation. But, for greater accuracy, the set of records should be heard, as frequently as possible, even before the theory is mastered. These will alsó introduce the student to the all-important intonation.
We hope you will enjoy this simple account of the English language and people, and that your labours will here and there be lightened by the occasional chuckle.
