FOREWORD
What a joy to be in Scotland and to bring a taste of Hungarian Culture to your town!
For more than four years, the Hungárián Cultural Centre in London has been working hard introducing both establíshed and young Hungarian talent to audiences throughout the United Kingdom - and what a responsive audi-ence they have been! This year we are presenting our diverse culture as it has never been presented before. Magyar Magic- Hungaiy in Focus 2004 is a series of concerts, exhibitions, film seasons and literary events in London and in other ten major cultural cities. One of them is Glasgow.
I believed from the first that our culture should not be isolated in the Hungárián Cultural lnstitute ín London, but that we should seek to actively to weave it in to the fabric of professional artistic life in Britain. Thus I sought out places where British and Hungarian artists, artistic institutions, universities, arts schools, impresarios, arts managers, scholars and academics, writers and publishers could meet in order better to understand each other, admire and inspire each other, and díscuss those of our cultural values which now, on the verge of Hungary's accession to the European Union, need to be highlighted more than ever.
Every event in the Magyar Magic festival is a result of dialogue. l should üke to thank the Glasgow School of Art to house this exhibition and Gödöllő, a lovely Hungárián town to come to Scotland. This occasion for me is about a meeting of cultures and about artists lending each other their inspiration. We are sharing our experiences and looking for the points where our two cultures meet. We could not have found a better venue for that than this Mackintosh Gallety where Scottish and Hungarian Art Nouveau meet.
