PREFACE During the past twelve years I have spent most of my time abroad, teaching in Europe, India, Pakistan, and Nigéria, where I now live. This has given me an opportunity of seeing at first hand somé of the great humán problems of our time: the poverty of many parts of Asia and Africa, the vast problem of illiteracy in the poorer countries of the world, the immense need for medical care in these areas, and the necessity everywhere for better understanding between the races of the world. I have alsó had the privilege of seeing somé of the work being done by devoted men and women to solve these problems. This book telis the stories of the work of seven unusual men and women. They are people of different races and religions, but all of them, having come face to face with an urgent humán problem, set about finding a solution through their own efforts. In all cases their work was hard, but it was exciting and rewarding, even when they did not have the success they hoped for. Sometimes they had to challenge authority; often they were misunderstood by their own people; at times they were forced to disobey governments.
