Preface to the Fifty-first Edition. This edition, like its predecessors, has been brought up to date by the insertion of the newest expressions relating to Sport, Traffic, Aviation, etc. Leipzig, May 1928. Preface to the Forty-first Edition. General Remarks. Both parts of the present edition of James's dictionary have been entirely rewitten. The work has been undertaken by Mr. George Payn, an Englishman of considerable repute as a lexico-graphist, with the assistance of German collaborators of note. This new recast may therefore be considered as brought entirely up to date as regards the correct translations of both English and German expressions. Special thanks are due to Dr. L e o n K e 11 n e r, Professor at the Czernowitz University, who has very kindly consented to undertake a revision of the work. The reputation of such an authority as Professor Kellner, with whom my firm has for many years enjoyed friendly relations, is a gurantee of the reliability of the wor.k. Vocabulary. In the choice of expressions particular care has been taken to include such as are used in modern English and German conversation and literature, and, in view of increasing American influences, transatlantic expressions have been made a particular feature. English substantives being formed from their verbs more or less arbitrarily by means of the suffixes "ing" and "er", such have been only included in cases where the translation has an unusual or especially important meaning in the German language. It has therefore not been thought necessary to include such words as "renewing" and "renewer." Pronunciation. The pronunciation of English words has again been based on the Stormonth system, which is characterised by simplicity and has been declared by many authorities as the most suitable for scholastic purposes. Mr. Payn has taken special care that the pronunciation given in the text is that most usual in better-class English society, and variations which occur in different English districts have also been taken into account in the new system of pronunciation.
