t was in Los Angeles that I first met Jo Fairley, over 25 years ago - in a Hollywood rock club on Sunset Boulevard, watching the rhythm and blues artist Robert Cray. She shared my love of music, chocolate, and later, quite clearly, yoga. By the time we met again Jo had opened a wellness centre in Hastings, on the south coast of England. Yoga Is an offering central to her establishment's wellness programme: it is a practice at the very heart of wellness.After a colourful, stressful and successful life of hard work and hard play in the nnusic industry in London and New York, I discovered yoga in my early 30s. I never remember having stretched before, let alone taken a conscious breath. I was a perfect candidate for yoga, and the yoga I was offered was perfectly pitched. It gave me the inner strength and awareness to take responsibility for my health and healing, and is now the source of my healthier life and livelihood. Yoga not only gave me much improved posture and mobility it taught me methods for self-healing after years of debilitating lower-back pain, poor digestion and breathing, (I suffered from asthma as a child), while also giving me a broader perspective on life and its potential. Now as a full-time yoga teacher, a large number of my students in all of the many countries I visit to teach are over 40, and many are still practising yoga regularly and enjoying a healthy active life in their 80s and 90s. It is never too late, or too early to start yoga.
