TO THE TEACHER
Our society is sometimes blamed for throwing young people from school into adult life without enough preparation; and it is to supply part of the need that we offer this book in the form of an induction to adult life. Our starting point is the part played by English in many sides of that life.
We do not forget examinations. Our aim here is to provide interest in, and incentive to practise, the skills which all C.S.E. examinations in English will test. The ground required by the various syllabuses is covered by this book and by Book 4; the latter should be consulted for hints on note-making and for the discussion of ccrtain topics (clichés, colloquialism, history of the language, for instance) set by one or two Boards. In 'Trial Run' we include sample papers to give teachers and candidates an idea of what may be set. If more tests are needed, they can be found in Examinations Bulletin No. i (H.M.S.O.), in English in the Certificate of Secondary Education (C.U.P.), and in the volume of papers collected by the National Association for the Teaching of English.
The chapters may be read in any order. The poems and prose extracts quoted within or at the end of chapters are meant to encourage reading and writing; they also provide opportunities for comprehension work if required. The activities involving reference books take for granted the availability of a school or local library, and of a librarian to advise. Some copies of Whitaker's Almanack, Pears' Cyclopaedia, the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Oxford Junior Encyclopaedia will go far.
